Edmonton? Columbus? New York? Minnesota? In a surprise announcement today, one of the few remaining desirable free agents on the market, left wing and former Montreal Canadien, Alex Tanguay has expressed his desire to play in Russian in the newly formed KHL for the 2009-10 hockey season. Most of the mainstream media has speculated for the last two weeks where Tanguay might land and sources have confirmed that up to at least six NHL teams were in the discussion for his services. In fact, one media outlet went even so far as to confirm that he had signed with the Florida Panthers, however, this report was immediately denied by Panther interim GM Randy Sexton. Details leaked to the media were that both Alex and his agent were working the phones to secure a deal, but had been unsuccessful in landing Tanguay a desirable new contract. ![]() Tanguay to the KHL? HockeyOutsiders has learned through our sources, a close personal friend of a friend with Alex, that he has decided to play for the KHL and that upon contacting several teams, that a bidding war has ensued for his services. We have learned that as many as a dozen teams could be in the running, but the front runners seem to be CSKA Moscow, Kazan Ak-Bars and Ufa Salavat Yulayev, where he could see time on a line with former NHLer Alexander Radolov. Tanguay was also intrigued with the idea of playing with Jaromir Jagr and the Omsk Avangard and it is believed that they have also submitted his agent a contract offer. Alex agreed to talk to us, late Thursday night and he commented in his thick French accent; "I am excited to get this opportunity to join some of my former friends in Russia to play in the KHL next season. I haven't quite decided where I want to play, but I see this as just another stepping stone in my career. The KHL is an emerging, exciting league and it is certainly a viable alternative to the rigors of NHL life. The money is good, the woman are warm and my skills will always be on display."
